Akai Advance Keyboards Air FX Promotion and VIP 2.0

Virtual instruments unite! Akai Professional recently announced the exciting new VIP 2.0 software with the acclaimed Creative FX Plus suite – compatible with their family of premium ‘Advance’ MIDI keyboard controllers.  The AIR FX Plus collection features 20 classic audio AU/VST plugins (formerly from Pro Tools) for production, mixing and mastering.

The VIP 2.0 software enables full control of an entire VST library directly from the hardware, and displays parameter changes via the beautiful colour LCD screen that's built into the Advance keyboards. The great thing about this software is that most instrument and effects parameters will automatically map to the hardware - similar to Native Instruments new 'NKS' protocol.

VIP 2.0 now applies this auto-mapping functionality to plug-ins made by AIR Music Tech (the same guys that make plug-ins for Pro Tools). In addition to auto-mapping, users can also stack instruments and effects together, bus and create patches within a nicely built ‘multi-mixer’ interface (see image below). Finding specific instruments and effects is now a breeze as users can quickly tag, filter and search through their entire plug-in library in seconds. The software can be used in stand-alone mode, or as a DAW plug-in. Once a patch is selected, the VIP 2.0 software automatically maps the device parameters to the hardware controls, and displays them on the display – nice! 

The Akai Advance does a great job of fusing the power and versatility of software instruments/effects with the tactile experience of using hardware, but it also adds enormous creative potential by allowing up to 8 different VST’s to be ‘stacked’ on top of each other.  Each instrument can contain up to 4 individual plug-in effects, and can be saved as a patch for future recall.
