ELLYFET

BeesNeez Elly Large Diaphragm Fet Microphone [K7 (K47) Capsule]

The BeesNeez Elly is a unique, large diaphragm fet condenser microphone that has a rich and warm rounded tone that will work in many applications but is optimised for vocal applications due to the fixed cardioid pattern. One of the highlights of the Elly is the BeesNeez cardioid K7 capsule. The Elly has been designed as an electronically-simple fet circuit, which is common among BeesNeez microphones as we prefer for the capsule and transformer to shape the sound of the microphone rather than manipulating it electronically. How do we keep component count low and noise low simultaneously? We are able to manage this by only using the best of the best of components available.

Circuit Design

The BeesNeez Elly Fet features our very own designed E-Core single-spool transformer. The E-Core transformer in this microphone offers us the advantage of a low-leakage transformer and a small physical size. We have also found during our testing phase that E-Core transformers such as this one offer a lower susceptibility to core magnetization. When a core becomes magnetized, the lamination permeability is reduced. Many phantom-powered microphones that do not have carefully chosen transformers over the years become magnetized and the functionality of the transformer is drastically reduced.

The capsule in the Elly Fet is the BeesNeez K7 cardioid microphone capsule. The K7 capsule has an almost linear response to the upper mids, and above 2000Hz, there is a slight boost of 2 to 3dB, which then starts to roll off at 17000Hz. Our mylar is 6 micron DuPont that we personally frame, sputter, tune, and fix to the backplate, which we also wholly manufacture.

Sonic Characteristics

Sonically, the Elly is reminiscent of many tube mics from the 1950s, i.e. the Neumann U47. However, it is a fet mic and has a faster slew than a tube microphone giving the best of both worlds – a smooth and fast sound. Electrically and acoustically, the Elly fet microphone is of a superior build quality to many microphones made today. The end result is a phantom-powered transformer balanced fet microphone that is optimised for the new low voltage bias version of the BeesNeez K7 Capsule.

Build Quality

The BeesNeez Elly body tube is made from a single piece of cold-formed 380 grade brass tube. We love using the 380 grade brass tube in this particular microphone because the high copper content in the 380 tube provides excellent rejection and shielding. After machining the body, it is sent to a local powder coater for completion. The head grille is cut from bronze cast and machined to a mirror finish. The mesh windows are then removed during the same process before the head grille is sent off for medical-grade nickel plating. The base, like the body tube, is made from 380 grade brass. However, this time it’s a solid brass round that we cut and form in our very own 8-axis turning center.
