The Neumann U87 large diaphragm studio condenser microphone is a studio staple. The current model is the U87 Ai and is known for it's high frequency detail and robust, solid bass. The U87 Ai version includes a wooden box but no other accessories. The versatile nature of the Neumann U 87 Ai has made it a 'go-to' mic for most general purpose applications in studios, broadcasting, film and television, orchestral recordings, spot miking single instruments, and famously as a vocal microphone.

      The U 87* is equipped with a large dual-diaphragm capsule with three directional patterns: omnidirectional, cardioid and figure-8. These are selectable with a switch below the headgrille.

      A 10 dB attenuation switch is located on the rear. It enables the microphone to handle sound pressure levels up to 127 dB without distortion.

      Furthermore, the low frequency response can be reduced to compensate for proximity effect.
